Music can be entertainment, an escape from life’s ordinary routine, something to dance or sing along to. But music can also be a way for an artist to explore their place in society and who they really are deep at the core of their being. And the latter is something that the resurgent Matt Terry does with power and confidence on his most personal and reflective single to date with ‘His Car’

‘His Car’ captures Matt Terry’s experiences in his first relationship in his early twenties. The man he loved offered the potential for a happy future, but societal pressures and a desire to keep his personal life private, meant Matt felt unable to reveal their love to the world. The song touches upon the emotions that came with it: the youthful inexperience and naivety that held him back, and the guilt that followed when he realised the relationship could never recover. Years later and with utmost confidence in himself, this beautifully expressive timeless ballad gives Matt the opportunity to reflect and apologise and hopefully bring others that might be going through similar struggles into his world.

I came on to the music scene in 2016 where my sexuality was the forefront of every conversation. Protecting myself I walked away to discover myself naturally and privately. As a young man without any experience in that area of life, how was I supposed to tell anybody who I was if I didn’t know myself? Today I know exactly who I am and I absolutely love the human I have become. With this story of mine I want to uplift and shine light on a huge part of the LGTBQ community that aren’t as present in our music industry or media. This song is an apology to the first man I ever loved. I asked him to keep our relationship under wraps for many years. This one is for your everyday boy next door falling in love with another.

Matt wrote ‘His Car’ with the track’s producer Xoro (Tim Kulawik).

While the emotive ‘His Car’ video places Matt in a very similar position to that conflicted moment in his life, the ultimately uplifting narrative demonstrates just how far he has come since. By embracing and celebrating who he really is, Matt provides a message of support for other young men who might also be struggling to understand and open up to others about their sexuality.

Matt Terry has enjoyed immense success over the years, with a #3 chart position for ‘When Christmas Comes Around’ (written by Ed Sheeran), 130 million streams for his debut artist track ‘Sucker For You’ and a Platinum certified Top 20 hit with the Enrique Iglesias and Sean Paul collab ‘Sύbeme La Radio’. Matt took the brave decision to step back from the limelight and become a go-to collaborator for artists as varied as international names David Guetta, Little Mix and Galantis, K-Pop favourites SEVENTEEN, and Dutch dance star MOTi. He also played Stacee Jaxx in ‘Rock of Ages’.

When Matt returned as an artist in his own right with last year’s ‘You Don’t Know Nothing’, the reaction proved that there was still a huge audience for him as the single hit #1 on the iTunes Pop Chart, #3 on the iTunes Chart, while the depth of his songwriting was further explored with the follow-up, ‘Ghost of Me’. It was around this time that Matt first publicly vowed that his new music would be a candid expression of his personal growth, and that’s a promise he has lived up to with ‘His Car’.
