Marissa Burwell’s new single, “Say It Again,” explores the disconnection in a relationship and “the broken record conversations that leave both parties feeling misunderstood. Where at one time the love songs reminded you of what you had, now it reminds you of what you’re scared to lose or miss out on”, despite this Burwell stresses that while “the song can be seen as a desperate cry, I think it’s important to hear the hope in the chorus. The dedication to find a way for those in the relationship to find that understanding that what they want above all else is more than an end, it is to be together.”

“Say It Again” was co-written with Vancouver-based artist Sam Lynch. Burwell describes her first experiences with co-writing as a meaningful step in her creative process.

I remember coming into the collaboration with so many unknowns, with a big one looming over my head—‘how do you write a song with another person?’ I truly didn’t know. Three songs later with Sam and two songs later with Cassie Dasilva, the nerves were settled, mostly. I have only really made music with men before, and there was something so spectacular in getting the chance to create with women, and these women specifically.

The track was recorded at Astros West Studios in Regina, engineered by Chris Dimas and Madison Nicol, and produced by Sam Lynch. It features contributions from Burwell’s longtime collaborators Madison Nicol (bass, guitar) and Chris Dimas (drums), along with Sam Lynch on guitar and banjo.

Burwell, originally from Regina and now based in Toronto, has built a reputation with her blindingly personal work, captivating warm vocals, and sharp prose.
