Marcelo de la Vega shares his latest single ‘Cut Out My Tongue’, the third release from his upcoming EP ‘An Observation’. The song stays true to his alt-pop sound and recognizable lead vocal, whilst leaning into a more upbeat dance sound in the chorus. Produced by long-time collaborator Pete Hutchings (Royal Blood, Gang of Youths, Adele) this alt-pop banger features an infectious drop with a ‘unicorn’ bass line.
Accompanied by a dramatic and disorientating visualizer, in which Marcelo appears bruised and bloody, a metaphor for the manipulation that the song is centered around. A past winner of Best Music Video at the Sony Clipped Music Video Awards, Marcelo concepts, directs, and produces all of his own visuals, a true advocate for the importance of music videos.
I wrote this song after I was in a relationship with someone who wanted to change everything about me, who did not accept me for me, and the resentment that built in the relationship.
Marcelo de la Vega is the antithesis of toxic masculinity, which he pours into everything he touches as he pushes boundaries and expectations in his visuals and storytelling. His writing is a navigation of his experiences and observations of relationships, family, gender norms, drug use, and privilege. A ‘typical’ scene for those growing up in the new millennium.
