New four-piece band Avis is the latest outfit to emerge from the burgeoning creative scene in and around the Hull and East Yorkshire area. Their nascent ideas and talents have been nurtured over time by the ever-supportive Warren Youth Project and now culminating in the release of Sunrise – a 3 track EP that perfectly epitomises where the indie/bedroom pop genre is headed in 2023.

Produced by local indie sound maestro Adam Pattrick, the release’s title track Sunrise, with its upbeat jangle-pop
guitars keep the mood bright and optimistic while lyrically touching on subjects of anxiety and working out how
to deal with life as it comes at you! Throughout the track lead vocalist, Sev has a conversation with the subconscious, asking many rhetorical questions that lean into themes of mental health and neurodivergence.

Avis is (James) Rymer (bass, backing vocals, drums), Jess Speck / Sev (vocals, guitar), and El Ponton (guitar, backing vocals) who all met up and came together through the Warren Youth Project before Zak Cook (drums) joined after a chance meeting with Rymer at their college. Key musical influences range from The Smiths, Lovejoy, and the Arctic Monkeys through to First of October, Courtney Barnette, Big Thief, and Declan McKenna and the band describe themselves as “energetic, emotive, teenage, angsty chaos”

We hope the record conveys well the many emotions expressed in each of the songs. If it can inspire other young people to experiment with music in their own way too, proving you don’t need decades of experience, that would be fantastic. – Rymer from the band on the EP,

Having supported label-mates Ketamine Kow at Hull’s Adelphi Club, there are plans afoot for future gigs in the area and beyond for Avis. Be sure to follow them on their social media for updates.
