Following on from her debut single Something, which caught the attention of BBC Introducing DJ Jericho Keys, who then offered her a session, Hull-based singer-songwriter Amelia Quinn finds influence from the 90s alt-pop scene with her new single Midnight. The track was written by two friends unable to sleep and pouring their emotions into a song about an inability to move on from past relationships.

Released on Hull’s Warren Records & recorded at Hull University with local indie producer Adam Pattrick, this passionate, catchy slice of alt-pop covers feelings of anger at being stuck within a situation while understanding that everyone around you is moving on & leaving you behind. How the lyric says “I’m glad you’ve forgotten, I’m glad you’re doing just fine”, lays bare honesty in Amelia’s songwriting in which cynical thoughts we can all get caught up in, keep us locked in a situation that’s often not good for us.

Midnight is for anyone who thinks everyone is moving on quicker than them… you can take as long as you need, if you’re still angry that is okay. The use of repetition in this song is a purposeful technique, which is used to provoke the ideas of trying & trying again within the same situation, but with nothing ever changing.

Amelia wishes her music to be seen as a safe place for people to understand they are not alone, their feelings are always valid & hopefully, as a result, they can look back at intense emotions as something beautiful rather than scary.

From her first ‘concert’ at 5 years old (singing an ABBA album in full to her parents), to sitting a music degree, it’s music that’s always been a mainstay in Amelia’s life. She attended stage school during her younger years, but it was singing that always took the lead. Taking various singing exams led to her studying music, first at college & then at University. Amelia then broke into Hull’s burgeoning grassroots music scene while at college, but everything came to a grinding halt as the pandemic struck. Determined to keep moving forward, she then built a following on social media posting videos of her performing cover versions as well as starting to write her material – and this was the start of her songwriting journey. Influenced by artists like Mazzy Star, The Sundays & The Cranberries, Amelia feels the last 3 years have been a whirlwind of expansion of her knowledge, and most importantly, her enjoyment of music. Having started performing her songs just acoustically, Amelia now has a full band performing live with her that features Josh Craig on guitar, Bob Tinsley on piano & guitar, Bea Harris on drums & Adam Camps on bass.

From headlining Hull’s Adelphi Theatre to performing at The Sesh, Trinity Live & the city’s Freedom Festival, this empathetic artist, with her talented band, is one to watch. Described as a ‘beautifully sad experience’, her multi-dimensional album is soon to be released but meanwhile, be sure to check her out live – she may even show you her award-winning hula hoop tricks!
