EMMMA – Wednesday’s Child

The rise of EMMMA has been powered by a feeling of metamorphosis – first discovering who she really was with her debut EP ‘Secondary Character’ and now moving on from a relationship with her recent songs. Channelling introspection from left-field pop soundscapes has sparked her rising status, leading to initial comparisons with Boygenius and Phoebe Bridgers. Now her ascent continues as she shares her new track, ‘Wednesday’s Child’

‘Wednesday’s Child’ is the biggest dynamic moment of EMMMA’s career to date. The track opens with an ominous rumble of synths and a sparse, metronomic beat as she takes us into a story of spending her twenties in a relationship which was built on a one-way effort. And then it unfolds like a wave of relief as EMMMA comes to terms with what happened, as increasingly thunderous drums and her full-feeling vocal bring a surfeit of drama. The anger she feels is all pointing in one direction as she sings, “So caught up in your own storm you’re creating / So big you can’t even see that it’s raining / All of the heartache is from your own making.”

EMMMA stumbled across the ‘Wednesday’s Child’ phrase on a sticker she found in a pub bathroom, and the “Wednesday’s child is full of woe” phrase felt particularly significant when she discovered that her ex was born on a Wednesday. But it wasn’t until she played the song back during a drive to Malibu that she realised just how cathartic writing the song was.

I’ve never cried to a song I’ve written before, but I did then. It perfectly encapsulated how I felt in that relationship – the anger, the frustration, the sadness and empathy. And it still hits me in that way each time, I think that’s what makes it so special.”

EMMMA wrote ‘Wednesday’s Child’ with fellow artists Jack Dean and Eden Rain. Jack Dean produced the track with Ben Wylen. ‘Wednesday’s Child’ and the recent single ‘Cut The Breaks’ emerge as EMMMA pushes forward towards her second EP, which follows last year’s acclaimed debut ‘Secondary Character’. These two songs are indicative of the inspiration she found within the tumultuous emotions that followed a break-up. Her words strike at the heart of her own experiences, while the music she creates – rousing hooks, gorgeous melodies, and immersive alt-pop production – brings her identity and personal truths to the forefront while appealing to fans of Chappell Roan, Holly Humberston,e and Bon Iver.

EMMMA most recently performed in Asia while touring as part of Sasha Alex Sloan’s live band. This year, she will be making her UK debut in May as the opener for JC Stewart
