Listen to our exclusive interview with, and music from, rising star Ellise on Sunday September 19th at 1pm PT/4pm ET. Ellise talked about writing her new album during lockdown and the personal connection of the songs, musical influences, what she loves listening to, plans for a full-length halloween album coming out next month & more!
After kickstarting 2021 by cementing herself as a definite one to watch, rising star Ellise unveiled her incredible and eclectic debut album ‘Chaotic’ this past summer. Written almost entirely by Ellise herself, the record reflects her upbringing listening to her father’s classic rock and Iranian mother’s traditional Arabic music, combined with her own pop sensibility influenced by the sights and sounds of the Y2K era.
From the instant buzz of album opener ‘Fatal Flaw’, to the playful, infectious chorus of ‘Zipperlips!’, the body of work is a beguiling collection of personal stories laced across a pop landscape. ‘Chaotic’ is a standalone piece of art that conveys everything Ellise has experienced in a turbulent year as well as toxic behaviours that have been motifs throughout her life. Avant-garde pop music has a new savour in the formidable Ellise.
I never want to be the good guy all the time. I think it’s okay to say that and let people know who you are. For now, I want to just keep making music that feels like me, that I feel like is special and that I feel like people will enjoy. This Ellise universe that I’m building out is just getting started.
The album is preceded by three incredibly well received singles – ‘Over Breakfast’, ‘Bubblegum Brain’, with its video starring drag superstar Shea Couleé, and ‘Feeling Something Bad’, which has received plaudits from the likes of Notion, The Line of Best Fit, Gigwise, Billboard + many others.
Over the last year, a consistent run of releases has put Ellise forward as one of pop music’s cult-adored, platforming herself through social media and its stan culture to develop an audience which thrives over every release and every tweet, backing it up with hyper dark-pop that’s as eccentric as it is nostalgic. Ellise is building an unstoppable brand filled with bubblegum pop palettes and a sound that is distinctively hers.
Bay Area-born Ellise is attracted to pop music’s ability to access the dark sides of the human experience. Her catalogue includes two Halloween EPs: 2018’s Can You Keep a Secret? and 2019’s Under My Bed. “911” from her debut EP attracted significant attention upon release, and Ellise has only continued to build her following since then, with over 100+ million total streams across platforms to date.
